PHAESTOS PALACE - MATALA

What you'll do

Join us for a fascinating journey through South-Central Crete as we explore the ancient Minoan civilization at Phaistos Palace. Drive through picturesque vineyards before arriving at the site of Phaistos Palace, one of the most important centers of the Minoan civilization. The first palace was built over 4,000 years ago, and although it was destroyed by an earthquake, a new and even more impressive palace was built in its place. You'll have the opportunity to explore the reconstructed buildings and see sections of the original palace, including a temple to the Great Mother Rhea.

Afterwards, we'll head to Matala, a charming port town that was once the main port of Phaistos and later of Gortyna. Here you'll see the famous caves carved into the soft stone and learn about their history from prehistoric times to the early Christian era. In the 1960s and 70s, Matala gained fame as a haven for hippies, and you can still see evidence of their influence on the town. Take some time to relax on the lovely beach before we return to our starting point. This tour is available on select days in English and German.
