LASSITHI PLATEAU

What you'll do

This tour will take you on a journey to the picturesque Lassithi Plateau, located 70km southeast of Heraklion at an altitude of 850 meters from the sea level. The plateau is the largest of all the plateaus in Crete and is surrounded by the peaks of Mount Dikti. You will have the opportunity to drive through most of the villages that surround the plateau and explore their main streets, which are full of tourist shops with traditional pottery and wefts, cafes, and taverns with excellent food.

One of the highlights of this tour is the visit to the famous Dikteon Cave (or Dikteon Andron or Dictaean Cave), which is one of the most important and famous of the 3,000 caves in Crete and the 8,500 in Greece. According to legend, Zeus was born in this impressive cave, which is rich in stalagmites and stalactites. In antiquity, the Dikteon Cave was already famous and dedicated to the worship of the greatest of the gods, as the many offerings found there indicate.

This tour is available on Saturdays and is only available from central and east areas of Crete. During the tour, you will have ample time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, explore the villages, and learn about the fascinating history and mythology of the area.
